Last Wednesday our students in grades 7-12 had the opportunity to experience and learn about a wide variety of cultural topics and concepts from those with first-hand knowledge and expertise through a day entitled Multicultural Day. Thanks to Jamie Bates, social studies teacher, and his assistants for organizing this day. The school day is organized every couple of years.
The day began with convocation and a short presentation, "No Place for Hate" by Jessica Gall from the AntiDefamation League. This was followed by a presentation by Mrs. Marilyn Johnson-Farr, from Doane College.
The students then participated in selected seminars and sessions of their choice. Topics were: Canada and Alaska - Nick Behring, Kolache Baking - Bonnie Kreshel, Polka Dancing - Charlie Keller, Accordion Lessons - Kelly Homolka and Dave Rokusek, Pupusas - Virginia Escobar, Yon Kolaba - Wilma Jackson and Tere Francis, Hispanic Culture - Josie Filipi, Genocide & Darfur - Mark Gudgel, Africa - Tanzania - Jim Rector, Egg Rolls/Laos - Massa Bphonsavat, Karate - Mike Pulliam, Judiasm - Elya Wilson, and Native Americans - Carol Rempp.
The culminating presentation was given by Aaron Davis, a member of the UNL's Championship football team in the 90s. His talk captivated the audience and kept them involved. Among other things he explained his view and differences between 'race', 'ethnicity', and 'culture'. He also stated that he didn't believe in peer pressure. He stressed that individuals can choose to do what they do and really struggle with a “self pressure”. Through his experiences and life stories he urged students to make the good choices in life.
Thanks also goes out to the W-C athletic booster club for serving a meal to the West Point Catholic football team and our team following the playoff game last Thursday. It is a great sign of sportsmanship and good will. Our thought for the week-“The most successful people are those who are good at plan B”-James Yorke
